Career
Build a career that weathers well.
1,840 people, 32 nationalities, 48 ships. Whether you join us on board or ashore, you join a family-owned company that promotes from within, invests in training, and signs long contracts on principle.
Why Orion
Why here.
Three things people tell us they like about working at Orion. We didn't put them on a poster — we asked anonymously, then wrote down the answers.
01
Long contracts.
Permanent positions ashore. Long-term seafarer contracts, not the 6-month merry-go-round. We have officers on their fourth contract — and cadets on their first.
02
Real career path.
Cadet → Officer → Master is a route 14 of our current Captains have walked. Ashore: structured rotations between Operations, Chartering and Technical.
03
Family-owned, privately held.
No quarterly investor presentations. Decisions made by people who own the ships. The third generation of the Lauritzen family runs the place — quietly.

Frequently asked.
Common questions from candidates — about rotation, contracts, wages and the application process itself. If your question isn't covered here, write to careers@orionbulkers.com and we will reply within two working days.
Senior officers (Master, Chief Engineer, Chief Officer) sail a 4 months on, 2 months off rotation. Junior officers and ratings sail 4 / 2 or 6 / 2 depending on rank and family situation. We try to avoid contract extensions — if we promise 4 months, we mean 4 months.
Travel between home and joining port is at company cost. Business class for Senior Officers, premium economy for Junior Officers and ratings on flights over 6 hours.
Wages are above ITF-TCC benchmark, reviewed annually each January. Long-service bonuses kick in at 3, 5 and 10 years. German social insurance and pension are covered for German-flagged-vessel seafarers; equivalent provisions apply on Liberian / Marshall Islands flag.
Ashore positions follow the Hamburg / Singapore / Manila local market benchmarks. Standard benefits package includes pension contributions, private health insurance, and an annual training budget per role.
We don't operate a voyage-by-voyage model. Every seafarer receives an open-ended employment contract from our entity in Hamburg, registered with the See-Berufsgenossenschaft (German Maritime Health Insurance). Between rotations you remain on the books — paid leave, social insurance continuous, vessel preference stored.
Typically 4 – 6 weeks from initial application to offer for seafarer roles; 6 – 8 weeks for shore positions including a 2-stage interview.
- Week 1 — application received, HR review
- Week 2 – 3 — shortlist interviews (video or in-person)
- Week 4 — reference checks, pre-employment medical (seafarer roles)
- Week 5 – 6 — offer issued, contract signed
For Hamburg-based shore positions we sponsor EU Blue Card and tier-equivalent skilled-worker visas. Relocation package covers shipping container, three months temporary accommodation, and one return trip for house-hunting. For seafarers no visa sponsorship is required — we sign on at port worldwide.
Yes — about 15% of each cadet class has prior experience outside shipping. We don't have an age limit. What matters is the willingness to spend 6 months a year at sea for the first three years, and a basic technical / numerate background.
